Sanitation
“If people did not prefer reaping to sowing, there would not be a hungry person in the land.”
—Unknown Author

In December 2006, Vwa Ayiti began our sanitation initiative for the villages of Labadi and Bod Mer Limbè.  We had many issues to contend with—past attempts to provide sanitation facilities both unsuccessful and environmentally devastating. Villagers were left with no options other than defecating in the surrounding area. Raw sewage was seeping into every possible source of water…the contaminated water became a breeding ground for disease and parasites.

Not only did Vwa Ayiti need to take immediate action, we were also committed to making sure our sanitation initiative would be environmentally sound and self-sustaining. Vwa Ayiti partnered with “SOL” (Sosyete Oganize pou Lanati). SOL has pioneered the use of “dry toilet” technology.  There are many advantages to the dry toilet; in addition to being environmentally friendly, the toilet’s end product is a nutrient rich fertilizer.  This fertilizer will be used to help Vwa Ayiti realize a long-term goal of promoting agricultural development and re-forestation.

In January 2007, Vwa Ayiti made history by inaugurating Labadi’s first two public dry toilets.  Artist Mènard Ally added his aesthetic touches to our toilets, sending a clear message to villagers and visitors alike, our toilets are not only environmentally friendly masterpieces…they are places of communal pride and dignity.

Dry toilet construction can range from $1,500-$3,000/US per toilet.  You can donate individually towards construction, or as a group/organization.  If your group sponsors an entire toilet, Vwa Ayiti will proudly display seals/logos and include your organization in all our press/web materials.
