Water Purification
“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” — W.H. Auden 1907-1973

Before Vwa Ayiti’s water purification initiative, the 5,000 residents of Labadi had to depend on a single source of water for all their needs; from drinking water and personal hygiene to washing clothes. The water was being treated by a 20 year old, non-maintained water purification system, and pooled in a single open-air reservoir.

Vwa Ayiti performed extensive tests and found the reservoir was infested with E.coli bacteria, confirming what our eyes had been seeing…the only available drinking water was a breeding ground for water born illnesses and crawling with parasites.

Vwa Ayiti took immediate action. We isolated a cleaner source of water from deep within the reservoir’s cistern. By examining the existing infrastructure, we found repairs that could effectively deliver this source of water to five distributions points throughout the village.

Beginning in January 2007, Vwa Ayiti began repairs on the existing infrastructure and we have opened three water distribution points throughout the village. Not only is running water a welcomed luxury, we have virtually eliminated foot traffic to the reservoir, greatly enhancing the overall purity of Labadi’s water.

We are currently forming partnerships to develop solar powered water purification systems for Labadi and Bod Mer Limbè. Until then, Vwa Ayiti will continue repairing the existing infrastructure, and employ alternative methods of water purification.
